Zita West Vitamen Vegicaps overview

Healthy parents tend to produce healthy babies. And healthy babies, in general, grow into healthy children and adults. Much emphasis is given to the importance of a woman’s health and nutritional status before and during pregnancy. But her male partner plays an equally crucial role at conception. The creation of a healthy baby requires not just a healthy egg but a good supply of properly formed mobile sperm as well. Over the past few years we have seen an increase in the number of men with low sperm counts. Recent research suggests that of the one in four couples who take longer than the average to conceive, the cause, in around 40% of cases, lies with the male partner.
Other research has indicated that up to eighty percent of birth defects are caused by defective male sperm. And it is now known that the cause of a Down’s syndrome baby may also lie with either the mother or the father.
But don't worry - there is a lot that can be done simply by making changes in nutrition and lifestyle. Poor sperm health, whether it be a low count, poor motility or malformations, can generally be improved by optimising the father’s overall health and nutritional status. But it is sensible to start this process as soon as possible. Sperm take ten weeks to develop sufficiently to leave the body, so planning for a pregnancy should start at least four months before conception takes place. That means giving up smoking, alcohol and social/recreational drugs, checking for genito-urinary infections, avoiding hot baths and tight clothing, eating healthily and taking supplementation, when necessary, to help redress nutritional imbalances. Drinking plenty of water is also important - at least 2 litres a day. Water is a large component of sperm, so a good, regular supply is vital in the process of production.

What is "RDA" and why are so many of the ingredients in Vitamen higher than 100%?
"RDA" is an abbreviation of "Recommended Daily Allowance." The RDA was devised by the Dept of Health in the UK in 1979 to provide guidance on the intake of a limited number of specific vitamins and minerals that an average adult should have daily in order to avoid a deficiency that may lead to disease or general ill-health. Whereas this was, and remains, a useful benchmark for judging the contribution that any supplement may make to reaching those minimum requirements, it wasn't intended to represent an indication of optimum intake. You will probably have noticed that many supplements, particularly premium priced ones such as our own, contain daily levels that are frequently many times higher than the RDA, sometimes substantially so. This is because the vitamins and minerals concerned have been set at therapeutic levels in an attempt to boost the body's store of the nutrients concerned, often for a particular and limited period of time, the need for which can of course vary depending on factors such as general health, age etc. It is universally recognised that pregnancy, and preparing for pregnancy, for example, benefit from special attention to nutrition on the part of both partners. All of the formulations within the Zita West range are well within the Government's guidelines for what represents the upper safe limit (USL) for long term daily supplementation of any given nutrient.

Can I take Vitamen Boost instead of Vitamen?

NO. We usually recommend that all our clients who are trying to get pregnant consider taking, as a first nutritional step, a good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement, like Vitamen, to help support their everyday diet. Vitamen has been specifically developed to help protect a man's daily intake of those micro-nutrients that we believe are the most important for all- round pre-conceptual health.  Vitamen Boost has been developed as a companion product to Vitamen for those of our clients who might also benefit from boosting their intake of antioxidants to help further protect their paternal DNA from oxidative stress. Research suggests that oxidative stress may be associated with an increased incidence of sub-fertility, recurrent miscarriage and IVF failure. Which is why we recommend the product specifically for couples who are finding it difficult to conceive rather than those who are just about to try. Because it has been designed as a companion product to Vitamen, it does not duplicate many of the important vitamins and minerals that can be found in Vitamen and it isn't suitable, therefore, as a substitute for it.

Vitamen - Ingredients and Their Benefits

  • Folic Acid – vitally important for the normal functioning of the immune system and for normal cell division.
  • Magnesium - supports the body's normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal neuro transmission and healthy cell division.
  • Selenium – important for normal spermatogenesis. Also helps protect DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage, as well as supporting the normal function of the immune system and male thyroid function.
  • Vitamin B12 – helps to maintain the normal synthesis and metabolism of steroid hormones, Vitamin D and important neurotransmitters.
  • Vitamin C – contributes to further protection of male DNA and the maintenance of normal metabolic functions. Particularly important if the diet is low in fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Vitamin E – helps to protect a man's DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage.
  • Zinc – needed to make the outer layer and tail of the sperm. Zinc is lost with each ejaculation, so an active sex life and a low zinc diet can place a man at risk.  Highly important for normal fertility and reproduction.
