Shape Up: 10 Super Foods offer benefits
The Center for Science in the public Interest has cited the following as "10 Super Foods" that should be included in a healthy diet:
Sweet potatoes -- Loaded with carotenoids, Vitamin C, potassium and fiber.
Whole grain bread -- Higher in fiber and about a dozen vitamins and minerals than refined white or "wheat" flour.
Broccoli -- Lots of Vitamin C, carotenoids and folic acid.
Strawberries -- Good source of Vitamin C and fiber.
Beans -- Low in fat and rich in protein, iron, folic acid and fiber. Choose garbonzo, pinto, black, kidney or lentils.
Cantaloupe -- A quarter of a melon supplies as much Vitamin A and C as most people need.
Spinach and kale -- Loaded with Vitamin C, carotenoids, calcium and fiber.
Oranges -- Rich in Vitamin C, folic acid and fiber.
Oatmeal -- plain, whole grain oatmeal is inexpensive and has no added sugar of fat.
Fat-free (skim) or 1 percent milk -- Excellent source of calcium, vitamins and protein with little or no artery-clogging fat and cholesterol.
